After the Storm: What to Check on Your Fence

A practical checklist for wood fences after a storm in Troup County — posts, panels, gates, fallen limbs, safety and when to call for repairs.

West Georgia gets strong thunderstorms, and fences take the hit. Here's what to check once it's safe to go outside.

Safety first

Stay away from downed power lines and call the utility. Don't climb on fallen trees or work with chainsaws near damaged fence sections under tension.

Check posts

Leaning sections usually mean a post has broken or loosened at ground level — often where it was already weakened by rot.

Check panels and pickets

Look for broken pickets, popped rails and sections pushed out by wind or limbs.

Check gates

Gates often shift after a storm. Does it still latch? Drag? Is the hinge post leaning? See gate repair.

Pets and security

If dogs are kept in by the fence, a temporary fix may be needed right away.

Take photos

Photos help with insurance (if applicable), neighbors and repair planning. Get wide shots of the fence line and close-ups of damage.

Before digging

Call 811 before any digging so underground utilities can be marked. Settle property line and shared-fence questions with neighbors first.

See fence repair.
