Most exterior paint failures — peeling, blistering, flaking — trace back to prep. Here's what good prep includes.
1. Wash
Paint doesn't bond well to dirt, chalky old paint, pollen or mildew. Shaded walls in West Georgia often have algae and mildew. For soft washing and pressure washing before painting, Southern Style Soft Wash is an independent LaGrange business TLC Repairs recommends. Soft washing uses lower pressure, which is gentler on siding, trim and old paint.
2. Let it dry
Wood needs to dry after washing or rain before primer or paint.
3. Scrape and sand
Loose and peeling paint needs to come off. Homes built before 1978 may have lead paint, and lead-safe work practices are required when disturbing it.
4. Repair wood
Soft or rotted trim, sills and siding need repair or replacement. See wood rot repair and siding repair.
5. Caulk
Fill gaps at joints with an exterior-grade caulk. See caulking.
6. Prime
Bare wood, repairs and some stains need primer.
7. Paint in the right weather
Follow the paint label for temperature, humidity and dry time. Summer storms and heavy dew can affect timing.
