Slab or pre-hung?
- Slab replacement keeps the existing frame and trim. It works when the frame is square and sound, but the new slab must be fitted and hinges and the lock bored to match.
- Pre-hung installation replaces the door and frame together. It is often the better choice when the frame is damaged or out of square, and usually involves new or reinstalled casing.
Exterior doors
Exterior doors face sun, wind-driven rain and humidity. Flashing, sill sealing and weatherstripping matter as much as the door itself. If the sill area is soft, wood rot repair may be part of the project.
Details to sort out before ordering
- Rough opening size, jamb depth and swing direction.
- Door style, material and finish.
- Hardware — new locksets, deadbolts, hinges.
- Who paints or stains the new door.
- Disposal of the old door.

Common questions
Should I buy the door myself?
You can, but talk with Trey first. Measurement errors, swing direction and jamb depth are common reasons a purchased door does not fit.
Can an older house take standard doors?
Older homes often have non-standard openings. A custom size or adjusting the opening may be needed — measure and discuss before ordering.
