"Remodel the kitchen" can mean very different projects. Deciding which one you mean is the most useful first step.
A refresh might be enough if…
- The layout works for how you cook.
- Cabinet boxes are solid and dry.
- Appliances stay where they are.
- You mainly dislike the look.
A refresh can include cabinet painting, new hardware, a backsplash, paint and flooring.
A remodel may be needed if…
- The layout doesn't work.
- Cabinets are water-damaged or falling apart.
- You want to move the sink, range or walls.
Moving plumbing, gas or electrical and changing walls involve licensed trades and often permits.
Make two lists
- Keep — what works and stays.
- Change — what bothers you.
Think about living through it
